Vladimiro Montesino, chef des services secrets sous la dictature du président Fujimori, s’est filmé dans son bureau chaque fois qu’il versait des pots de vin à des producteurs de la télévision ou à des politiciens de partis adverses, afin que ceux-ci soutiennent Fujimori pour sa seconde candidature à l’élection présidentielle. Découvertes et diffusées par la seule chaîne de télévision qui ne s’est pas laissée corrompre, elles sont à l’origine du scandale qui a mené à la chute de Fujimori. Ce qui nous a intéressé dans cette histoire, c’est la manière dont Montesinos s’est fait prendre à son propre jeu. Le résultat fût sa fuite au Venezuela et sa tentative de changer de visage. Pour cette installation nous avons retiré les personnages de l’image pour ne garder que le décor. C’est une image quasi iconique au Pérou, tout le monde la reconnaît. Un mouvement subtile et hypnotique appliqué à l’image en brouillait sa perception, décuplant le sentiment de malaise.

Vladmiro Montesino, secret services’ chief under Fujimori’s dictature, recorded himself, in his office, while bribing TV producers and politicians in order to get them to advertise for the president before the second turn. These video archives were found and broadcasted by a different TV channel, it created a scandal leading to the government’s fall. What interested us is that Montesinos was trapped by its own game and the result was his vanishing: he ran away in Venezuela and tried to change his face. We took all the characters out of the image, only the set stays. this is a very iconic image in Peru, everybody recognizes it. The image was projected on small scale so that one has to get close to it to watch it. Although it seems to be a still, the image is moving in a very subtle and hypnotic way making one wonder if one’s own perception is altered.
